Egyptian police have arrested three journalists working for the Al-Jazeera broadcaster in the capital Cairo for holding illegal meetings with the banned Muslim Brotherhood, which was declared a terrorist organisation last week.

Those arrested includes the TV network's Cairo bureau chief Mohamed Fadel Fahmy, former BBC correspondent Peter Greste, and an unnamed cameraman, the BBC reports.

The Interior Ministry said that cameras, recordings and other material had been seized from rooms at a hotel in Cairo.

It accused the journalists of broadcasting news that were "damaging to national security," the report added.
