Current McLaren driver Fernando Alonso, who is acknowledged as one of the grid's very best drivers, is all set to have his first taste of IndyCars when he takes to the Indianapolis Motor Speedway for his first test on May 3 ahead of his debut appearance at the Indy 500.
Earlier this month, McLaren had announced that they would return to the Indianapolis 500, using Honda engines after an absence of nearly 38 years.
McLaren had further said that Alonso, who has won 32 of the 275 Grand Prix he started, would run in the 101st Indianapolis 500, featuring a joint entry with Honda and Andretti Autosport.
Alonso has also decided to skip F1's Monaco Grand Prix to compete in the May 28 Indy 500, Sport24 reported.
The Spaniard driver is scheduled to visit the Andretti team this weekend at Barber Motorsports Park in Birmingham before he will head to Sochi for the Russian Grand Prix.
Following the F1 race, he will return to the United States to take part in a one-day IndyCar test.
