Remembering Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, who presented khadi as a symbol of nationalism, equality and self-reliance, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah on Tuesday said the charkha installed at Terminal-3 of the IGI Airport here would promote India's rich cultural heritage.
Shah, who was speaking after unveiling the world's largest charkha here, said the people are gradually attracted towards khadi courtesy Prime Minister Narendra Modi's call for the same in his 'Mann ki Baat' programme.
"But if the people of the society do not give this an eco-effect then this tilt will gradually diminish in the days to come. So, the people must give due importance to this. One must first begin from his family and if one individual buys khadi worth Rs. 5,000 then definitely the situation will change," he added.
The BJP president also lauded the Ministry of Micro Small and Medium Enterprises for taking effective steps in this regard.
He said the installation of the charkha would carry forward the legacy of promoting India's rich culture heritage through different artworks.
Installed between departure gates number 3 and 4, the charkha was built in Ahmedabad by 42 carpenters in 55 days. The installation is 27 feet long and 15 feet tall.
The charkha has been installed by the Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC).
