Xolile Mngeni, who shot Anni Dewani in Cape Town, is now set to walk free after South African officials decided to release him on grounds of mercy. The 25-year old who shot Dewani in the backseat of a taxi on November 13, 2010, was suffering from cancer. A team of 11 doctors had declared earlier that his time is running out after examining his medical record and health.
According to the Dailystar, a secret report prepared by the Correctional Supervision and Parole Board last week recommended Mngeni should be allowed to walk free. He was sentenced to life imprisonment in December 2012, two years after he killed the newly-married Swedish woman who was in Capetwon for her honeymoon.
Mngeni's accomplices, Zola Tongo and Mziwamadoda Qwabe, are already serving prison sentences for the murder. The case against Anni's husband, British businessman Shrien Dewani, is scheduled to begin in October this year.
Dewani's father, Vinod Hindocha also voiced his displeasure at the court's decision, the report added.
