Arun Jaitley questions legal wisdom of Rahul Gandhi

Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Arun Jaitley on Saturday questioned the legal knowledge of Congress Vice President Rahul Gandhi over his remark on the credibility of the court appointed SIT and its report on the 2002 Gujarat riots.

In an interview, Gandhi had said that legal accountability for the riots should be fixed and dismissed the talk of a clean chit by the court appointed SIT to the BJP prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi in the Gujarat riots.

In a sharp attack Gandhi, Jaitley said that the report was a logical conclusion of findings of a judicial officer who knew more of law than Gandhi.

"The SIT was appointed by the Supreme Court, Supreme Court monitored it and an amicus was appointed to assist the Supreme Court. Thereafter, every fact was placed before the judge; the judicial officer applied his mind and came to a judicial finding. I think Mr. Rahul Gandhi can allow the judicial institution to do its work. They probably know a little more law than him," said Jaitley on Saturday.

The BJP leader also said that the upcoming elections needed a strong voice to represent its interest in Delhi and that his qualifications prove him to be a fitting match.

Meanwhile commenting on the agenda for the upcoming elections, Jaitley added that apart from the anti incumbency factor, the Congress's scorecard also was too tarnished for voters to trust it again.

"Well, I think 2014 general election is held in the context of a mood of change in the country. The UPA government has been a disaster and there is a strong anti-incumbency. The economy is at a standstill, it's on the downslide, governance has been ineffective, corruption has been extremely high and obviously it is these factors which are compelling the people to look for a change," said Jaitley.
