Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday hailed what he called was the great 'sportsman's spirit' of Australia, adding that that nation can export this important value to the world.
"Many things about Australia have made an impression on me. I know that I am well versed with a phrase which is of use in every process of life. That phrase in 'sportsman's spirit'. This spirit can be the greatest strength of any society and if there are no sports, then sportsman's spirit cannot exist," Prime Minister Modi said to the assembled at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground (MCG) here.
"Australia has both these treasures. It has sportsman's spirit, and I believe that the nation should export that to the world," he added.
Thanking his Australian counterpart Tony Abbott for playing host to him, Prime Minister Modi also hailed the great friendship which has blossomed between the two leaders.
"In the past four days, I have experienced everything that Australia is known for - natural beauty, sunshine, great cities, friendly and cheerful people and strength that has made you an economic force in the world. Prime Minister Abbott, you have truly been generous with your hospitality and warmth. I am deeply honoured that you have come to host such a wonderful reception. Thank you," he said, addressing Prime Minister Abbott.
"This memory will stay with me forever. It touched my heart. I can tell you that not only me, but all Indians are deeply touched by this reception. The best part about this trip is that usually, when two heads of state meet, there is a lot of formality. However, between Tony Abbott and me, there is none," he added.
Earlier in the day, Prime Minister Modi visited a war memorial and addressed the Australian Parliament in Canberra before departing for Melbourne, where he attended a meeting with business leaders.
After concluding his visit of Australia, Prime Minister Modi will travel to Fiji as the third leg of his three-nation, 10-day trip.
