Baby-selling scam: Missionaries of Charity assures cooperation

The Missionaries of Charity on Tuesday released a statement saying that it will fully cooperate with the investigation in relation to the child-trafficking case that happened in the Ranchi home of Missionaries of Charity.

They also expressed their disappointment with the false news being circulated against the organisation.

"We are fully cooperating with the investigations and are open to any free, fair and just inquiry. In this context, especially in view of many myths being spread, information distorted and false news being diffused and baseless innuendos being thrown about regarding the Mother Teresa Sisters, it is expedient to lay down the turn of events as they actually transpired," read the statement.

The statement further clarified that neither Nirmal Hriday nor the Sisters could ascertain if a mother actually surrendered her child to the CWC.

Nirmal Hriday also expressed their disappointment with the government's treatment towards it, following the incident.

Earlier this month, Missionaries of Charity's Shishu Bhawan at Hinoo was raided by the CWC and the police, taking all the children in the shelter home in their custody.

Subsequently, it was found that a staff of the organisation allegedly sold infants born to unmarried women, without the knowledge of the CWC.

Two nuns were also arrested in regards to the same, who later confessed to the crime.

While Sister Concelia was in-charge of 'unwed mothers' at Ranchi, Anima Indwar would escort the unwed mothers, their babies and their guardians to hospitals and CWC office.

On Monday, Minister of Women and Child Development (WCD), Maneka Sanjay Gandhi, instructed the state governments to get child care homes run by Missionaries of Charity all over the country inspected immediately.
