Former prime minister of Pakistan Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz pinned the blame on bad weather for their failure to attend the proceedings of the Avenfield properties case against them.

According to ARY News, as Judge Muhammad Bashir commenced proceedings, the Pakistan Muslim League (Nawaz) supremo's lawyer informed the court that they couldn't make it to Islamabad from Lahore owing to rough skies.

Subsequently, the advocate filed an appeal for exemption from personal appearance during today's trial.

However, the former prime minister's son-in-law, retired Captain Muhammad Safdar, was among the attendees in the court.

Maryam's counsel in the case resumed cross-examination of prosecution witness Wajid Zia, the head of the Panama Joint Investigation Team (JIT) that probed the Sharif family's offshore assets.

The Avenfield Properties case includes allegations against the Sharif family of purchasing four flats in Park Lane, UK, without legitimate financial means.
