Bangladesh is observing the Martyred Intellectuals Day today, paying tribute to the intellectuals who were killed in the Liberation War of 1971.
According to The Daily Star, renowned academics, engineers, doctors, journalists and other famous personalities were killed systematically by the Pakistan occupation army and their local collaborators on the day in 1971.
Their bodies were later dumped at Rayerbazar, Mirpur and some other killing fields in the Dhaka.
The government has made detailed plans to observe the day to pay tribute to the martyred intellectuals.
While paying tribute to them, President Abdul Hamid and Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina placed wreaths at the Memorial at Mirpur.
