The Bangladesh Supreme Court on Wednesday upheld the death sentence of Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) leader Salauddin Quader Chowdhury for committing crimes against humanity during the Liberation War of 1971.
A four-member bench headed by Chief Justice S.K. Sinha delivered the verdict today.
The apex court, however, acquitted Chowdhury of charge number seven in which the tribunal had sentenced him to serve 20 years in jail.
On October 1, 2013, the appellate tribunal found Chowdhury, 66, guilty of nine of the 23 charges brought against him by the prosecution.
He was former prime minister Khaleda Zia's parliamentary affairs adviser from 2001-06, and had appealed against the tribunal verdict on October 29, 2013.
He is on record as having rejected the charges, claiming that he was in Pakistan from March 29, 1971 to April 20, 1974.
