Bayern thrash 10-man Shakhtar 7-0 to reach CL quarters for fourth successive time

Bayern Munich thrashed 10-man Shakhtar Donetsk in the last-16 second leg to reach their fourth successive Champions League quarterfinals.

Bayern took the lead through Thomas Muller's penalty, which came after Olexandr Kucher received the quickest red card in competition history for a third-minute foul.

Jerome Boateng and Franck Ribery then scored either side of half-time to make it 3-0, after a first leg which ended goalless, the BBC reported.

Muller, Holger Badstuber, Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski also contribute with goals to make it 7-0 before the final whistle blew.

Bayern equaled their biggest Champions League win as they reached their eighth quarterfinal in 11 seasons. The only time the Germans have been eliminated from a European competition after drawing the first leg away 0-0 was in 1981.

From the moment Kucher rashly opted to slide in on Mario Gotze inside the penalty area within the first three minutes, it was one-way traffic for the five-time European Cup winners, who last lifted the trophy in 2013.

A red card was followed by Muller's inevitable calm finish from the spot and it practically ended the game for Shakhtar then only.

By half-time, Bayern had enjoyed 79 percent of possession, with 15 shots on goal compared to Shakhtar's one.

Bayern Munich coach Pep Guardiola said that he always had faith with his players and added that he is very happy with their game. He claimed that people said it might be a tricky game but added that his players are there for the big moments.

Guardiola admitted that the red card, obviously, changed things but insisted that his players perfectly executed their game plan, claiming that sometimes it is not that easy against 10.
