Bill Lawry slams Joe Root for not scoring 'quickly enough' in MCG Test

Former Australian Test captain and veteran commentator Bill Lawry had a crack at England player Joe Root, on his first day behind the microphone for the winter Ashes, for not scoring quickly enough during the first day of the fourth Ashes Test

Lawry, despite being one of the bravest and finest players of his era, was dubbed a 'corpse with pads' for his defensive play.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Lawry expressed his dissatisfaction with Root's lack of aggression against some accurate bowling from Australia, with Root's strike-rate hovering in the low 30s in the second half of his innings.

Stating that Root's strike-rate was 'far too low' for a No.3' batsman, Lawry also said that Root had put himself under enormous pressure as he did not rotate the strike, adding that if a player bats like Root had done, he would be knocked down by the opposition easily.

Root later was out after four overs, the report added.
