Congress on Friday took a jibe at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) asserting that the entire conspiracy webbed by the BJP "stands exposed" following the 2G verdict.
"The entire conspiracy webbed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and BJP stands exposed following the 2G verdict pronounced by a special CBI court. BJP maligned the country and the Congress party for years together making false allegations of corruption as their principle strategy to gain power," Randeep Surjewala said during a press conference here.
He further attacked former Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) Vinod Rai for conspiring with the BJP, saying that "he created a fallacious web of corruption".
Surjewala's remarks come after all accused in the 2G spectrum allocation scam case, including former telecom minister A Raja and Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) MP Kanimozhi, were acquitted by the special CBI court on Thursday for want of evidences.
"While different figures were presented by the CAG (1.76 lakh crore), the CBI (30,984 crore) and former Directorate General of CAG RP Singh (Rs 2.645 crore), the CBI utterly failed to prove a single charge of corruption, criminal conspiracy or wrongdoing," Surjewala added.
He further asked should Narendra Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley and the BJP leadership not be held accountable for "selling lies and false allegations qua a 'scam and corruption' where none existed as proved by the CBI court?".
The verdict was announced nearly seven years after the first arrest was made by the CBI in 2011.
The alleged scam relates to the granting of 2G spectrum licences in 2007-08, which caused, according to a report by the then Comptroller and Auditor General of India, a loss of Rs 1.76 lakh crore to the public exchequer.
