BJP trying to shield ABVP: Congress on JNU row

Launching a scathing attack against Home Minister Rajnath Singh for saying that the JNU incident was supported by Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed, the Congress Party on Monday accused the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of trying the shield its student wing Akhila Bharatiya Vidhyarti Parishad (ABVP).

Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit said that the ABVP was trying to bring disrepute to the JNU in the matter.

"What the Home Minister has said is very laughable. The Home Minister has spoken very lightly about a very serious issue. They are trying to shield the ABVP. Some videos show that it was ABVP activists who raised anti-India slogans to bring disrepute to JNU," Dikshit told ANI.

"I think the government isn't just overreacting but purposely reacting to destroy a great institution like JNU," he added.

Meanwhile, another Congress leader Pramod Tiwari asked the Home Minister to reveal the input based on which he made such a serious remark.

"The Home Minister has several inputs. This is a very serious allegation and the Home Minister should make the basis of this allegation public. It should be clarified what input he had and on what basis he made such a statement," he told ANI.

Earlier, National Conference leader Omar Abdullah and Left leaders Sitaram Yechury and D Raja questioned Rajnath's claim that the JNU event about Afzal Guru had the support of LeT chief Hafiz Saeed.

Rajnath had said a programme that allegedly praised Parliament attack convict Afzal Guru at Delhi's Jawaharlal Nehru University had the support of Lashkar-e-Taiba chief Hafiz Saeed.

"The incident at JNU has received support from Hafiz Saeed. This is a truth that the nation needs to understand. What has happened is very unfortunate," he said.

His comment came two days after a series of tweets, allegedly by Saeed, appeared under a hashtag asking Pakistanis to support the agitation in JNU.

However, the Delhi Police claim that it was fake twitter account.
