Border Security Force (BSF) on Tuesday seized huge cache of heroin, arms and ammunition in Punjab's Gurdaspur district along the Indo-Pakistan border.

BSF officials said the intruders were trying to make an attempt to cross the fence at the border but could not succeed due to the strict vigil of forces.

"On April 1st, 2014, at 2: 30 am in the morning, the officers on duty at the border suspected some movement near the fencing. Our officers challenged them. As a result of which, the smugglers tried to escape with their things. The officers fired upon them, due to which the smugglers failed to carry their things back with them," Deputy Inspector General of BSF of Firozpur range, Ashwani Kumar Verma said.

However, the smugglers managed to escape. After inspecting the area thoroughly, the officials recovered 28 packets of heroin worth 13.5 million rupees in the international market was seized at the Khanpur post. Along with heroin, arms which include two magazines and 42 bullets were seized. Two mobile phones and two sim cards were also seized.

Last month, BSF seized 40 packets of heroin in Punjab from smugglers who were trying to trespass into Indian Territory along the India-Pakistan border.

Drugs trade has been thriving in Punjab, which shares its international border with Pakistan.

Increasing seizures indicate that the state is on a new and dangerous high on drugs.
