Punjab Congress chief Captain Amarinder Singh officially tendered his resignation as the Member of Parliament after meeting Lok Sabha Speaker Sumitra Mahajan this afternoon.

Singh told the media, "I have formally submitted my resignation. We are protesting against the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) canal row verdict and will take this issue to the public."

"I feel strongly about the SYL issue and I being the President of Punjab Pradesh Congress and all MLAs, who have resigned, will go in public to raise this issue," he added.

Singh further said that he had already submitted his resignation on November 11 but the Speaker today wanted his resignation in-person.

"So, I have written a one-line resignation," he said.

On November 11, Singh had tendered his resignation along with 42 Congress MLAs after the Supreme Court's ruling on Punjab's water-sharing agreement with other states.

The case involves sharing of Ravi-Beas river waters largely between Punjab and Haryana, besides Rajasthan, Delhi, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu and Kashmir and Chandigarh.

Reacting to the age old struggle between Punjab and Haryana over the Sutlej Yamuna Link (SYL) Canal, the Supreme Court had earlier on November 11 passed a verdict stating it is unconstitutional for the Punjab Government to terminate a water-sharing agreement with other states.
