England opener Michael Carberry has reportedly turned heads during the ongoing first Ashes Test at the Gabba with his streamlined, space-aged helmet, which is more suited to Star Wars than an Ashes Test.

British company Ayrtek has reportedly designed the helmet of Carberry, who was caught at slip off a delivery of Mitchell Johnson after making 40 runs in the second day at Gabba, and the design may be the safest cricket has ever seen.

According to Telegraph.com.au, although the helmet looks peculiar, its carbon-fibre material is supposed to deflect a ball on impact, rather than simply stop it crashing into the skull, adding that the helmet also apparently fits perfectly to every head.

The report also said that a batsman pumps the helmet with air just before going out in the middle by pushing a red button affixed on its surface 15 times, after which the helmet moulds itself to the batter's head.

The tight fit of the helmet is also aimed at lessening the chance of the grille being forced into the nose after being struck, the report added.
