CBFC should use powers under constitutional framework: Bombay HC on 'Udta Punjab'

Asserting that there is no mention of the word "censor" in the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC), the Bombay High Court on Monday pulled up the Board over demanding 89 cuts in 'Udta Punjab' for granting a certificate for its release, while directing it to use its power as per the constitutional provisions and directions issued by the Supreme Court.

The high court observed, "There is no mention of the word 'censor' in the Board. The Board should use its powers under the constitutional framework and the SC's directions."

Udta Punjab is a movie, which is depicting ill-effects of the drug menace, it added.

'Udta Punjab', which depicts the drug problem in Punjab, has stoked both political and artistic debate across the nation.

One of the makers, Phantom Films, had challenged some of the CBFC's suggested cuts in the Bombay High Court, such as deleting references to Punjab, two graphically vulgar scenes and toning down an expletive-laden script.

The CBFC had on Sunday gave a nod to the film with 'A' certificate and 13 cuts.

'Udta Punjab' is directed by Abhishek Chaubey and stars Shahid Kapoor, Diljit Dosanjh, Kareena Kapoor and Alia Bhatt in lead roles. It is scheduled to be released on June 17.
