Union Home Minister Sushil Kumar Shinde said Tuesday that the Central Government has no role to play in the formation of the next state government in Delhi, and therefore, would not interfere in the matter.
He categorically stated that it was the duty and first choice of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to form the government, and if it refused to do so, then the offer would go to the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
If none of these two parties agreed, then it was the responsibility of Lt. Governor Najeeb Jung to recommend central rule to the president as per the Constitution, Shinde said.
"What can we do? We will have to wait and watch...We cannot do anything. Whatever is to be done, has to be done by the two parties (BJP and AAP)," Shinde said at a press conference here today.
Shinde also said that the Home Ministry has not received any communication from the office of the Delhi Lt.Governor on the subject.
"The Delhi LG office has only sent the resignation of the former Chief Minister (Sheila Dikshit)," he said.
He also said that his ministry continues to investigate the source of alleged foreign funds to AAP.
