Change in system required to tackle crime against women: NCW chief on minor rape

Condemning the recent gangrape of a minor at gun point in the capital, National Commission for Women (NCW) chief Mamata Sharma on Tuesday said that a change in the system is required to tackle the increasing crime against women.

"I condemn the whole incident, and I think we need a change in the system to tackle the increasing crime against women. What happened to the girl is shameful. Tomorrow our delegation will visit the place," said Sharma.

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Barkha Shukla said that an open discussion in schools regarding such issues, to make children more aware is extremely important.

"The way such incidents are being reported everyday, especially with minors is shameful. It is a good thing that the police has been active in this case and has arrested three people but I think an open discussion on awareness is very important," said Shukla.

"The easy access to television and pornography by children has impacted their minds negatively. They do not fear the law anymore. It is true that the police have become much more active but they need to work even more. Also, I think what Maneka Gandhi had suggested should be implement," she added.

A class 10th student was raped at gun point by five people in Uttam Nagar area of west Delhi.

The incident reportedly took place on July 19th when the girl was on her way to school.

The five accused raped her in a house in the same area at gun point and also made an MMS clip of the entire incident.

The incident came to light after the victim's parents filed a complaint about the incident. Three of the accused have been arrested by the police, out of whom two are minors.
