Police in Chhattisgarh on Friday confirmed the arrest of two suspected Students Islamic Movement of India (SIMI) militants.

Superintendent of Police Om Prakash Pal said: "The interrogation is going on. They have been actively involved in the activities of SIMI in Chhattisgarh and they have been in touch with other SIMI militants also. However, they have no connection with the rally of Narendra Modi. They were arrested as police was looking for them for a long time."

Students Islamic Movement of India was formed in April 1977 in Uttar Pradesh. A banned Islamic student organisation, it works for the 'liberation of India from western materialistic cultural influence and to convert its Muslim society to live according to the Muslim code of conduct.

The Government of India blames the organisaton for militant activities.

A ban was imposed on the outfit in 2001 soon after the 9/11 attacks. The organisation was labelled a militants association by administrations in India and the U.S.
