Concerned Antony says Indian Navy taking steps to avoid accidents

Defence Minister A.K.Antony said Thursday that he is concerned over reports of mishaps and accidents taking place in the Indian Navy, but added that he has been assured that corrective action is being initiated to prevent them in the future.

Responding to a question on what is the government's response to accidents suffered by some Indian Navy vessels over the past few months, Antony said: "It is a matter of concern. Over the years, the assets of the Indian Navy have substantially increased. So, sometimes, this speedy induction of equipment, warships, platforms, creates some logistical problems. But, at the same time, that is not to say that we should be careless. That, I don't agree with."

Antony further stated that the Indian navy was no more the navy of the past.

"In the last ten years, the Indian Navy has substantially changed. The Indian navy has become one of the most powerful, advanced and modern navies of the world. That is why almost all countries want close cooperation with the Indian Navy. Almost all sea-faring countries of the world want to have joint exercises and collaborations with the Indian Navy. Our navy has become one of the best in the world, at least in the top three or four. Every year, they are acquiring so many most modern equipments, platforms, warships - Vikramaditya, T-81. Every year, from Indian shipyards itself, we are supplying five new warships to the Indian Navy," Antony said.

He said that every accident in the armed forces is very important, and is being inquired into.

"Proper corrective action is being taken. Navy will have to strictly follow standard operation procedures. I am told the Indian Navy is taking corrective action. Navy is more anxious to minimise such incidents and take corrective action," Antony said.
