Congress criticises Sadhvi Prachi's remarks

The Congress on Monday strongly criticised Vishwa Hindu Parishad leader Sadhvi Prachi for her remarks regarding family planning, adding that an increasing population is one the greatest problems facing India.

The grand old party was reacting to Prachi's remarks made in the Bhilwara district of Rajasthan, where she called for a law to ensure a 'hum do, hamare char' policy to realise dream of a Hindu nation.

"Such statements have become commonplace ever since sadhus entered politics via the BJP. Population explosion is one of the greatest problems being faced by the country and poverty, health and education are all linked to this one great problem," Congress leader P L Punia told ANI.

"Whether it an NDA or UPA government at the Centre, keeping the population in check has always been a priority. India's motto on the issue is 'hum do hamare do'," he added.

Another Congress leader, Shobha Oza claimed that BJP leaders have made such 'controversial' statements to the divert attention of the people.

"The BJP and its affiliated parties are making such statements to divert attention from the fact that no work has been done since the BJP came to power at the Centre," she said.

Meanwhile, CPI(M) politburo member Brinda Karat said that the women of India will never take such statements seriously.

"These self-styled godmen should be a little more careful with their tongues," she added.
