Congress leaders on Wednesday applauded the UPA Coordination Committee and the Congress Working Committee's decision to go ahead with the formation of a separate state of Telangana, claiming that it was the party's promise which has been fulfilled.

Congress leader Jagdambika Pal said the formation of Telangana was expected since so many people had sacrificed their lives for an independent state of Telangana

"Telangana has been a long demand and it was decided in 2004 and 2009 that the state will be formed. Many people had sacrificed their lives for an independent state. Looking at all these things, statehood for Telangana was expected and the Congress Core group has taken this decision and I hope the Cabinet will discuss it and take a positive call on Telangana formation," he said

Another Congress leader, Rasheed Masood, also endorsed the decision on the formation of Telangana, claiming that the ruling party had fulfilled its promise to the people of Telangana. But he added that there was aneed for a state reorganization committee to ensure a smooth transition.

The Congress Working Committee (CWC) and the UPA Coordination Committee cleared the formation of Telangana on Tuesday evening. They announced Hyderabad as the joint capital for ten years.

The Union Cabinet is likely to meet this week to take a final call on Telangana formation.
