The gunman who allegedly attacked a free-speech debate and a synagogue in Copenhagen was 22-years-old, born in Denmark and had violent past, Danish police said.

The police conceded that the gunman was known to them due to his association with criminal gangs and because he had convictions for violent offences and dealing in weapons. They added that he was armed with pistols when he was shot dead during police action, reported the BBC.

According to the Danish police, the gunman was acting alone.

The police have not revealed the identity of the attacker but several media reports widely named him as Omar El-Hussein.

A film director and a synagogue guard were killed in separate attacks while five cops were injured.
