The Communist Party of India (CPI) on Monday cautioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi to avoid getting into a trap in the name of strategic partnership during his maiden trip to the United States.

Addressing a news conference here, CPI general secretary Sudhakar Reddy said the U.S. is always seen pressurizing India on various aspects and had gone to the extent of giving military support to Pakistan when the two countries were not on good terms.

"Our Prime Minister should be careful from getting into a trap from the manipulation of the United States of America in the name of strategic partnership of U.S.A. and India. U.S.A for all these years we have seen, in the post independence period, was only more interested about its own interests trying to pressurise economically, politically and even militarily by supporting Pakistan when there was a problem between our two countries," said Reddy.

Modi's schedule in the United States features address to United Nations General Assembly, a rally of Indian Americans at New York's Madison Square Garden and talks with President Barack Obama in Washington.

Prime Modi Modi is scheduled to visit the U.S. later this month.

Meanwhile, Reddy lauded Prime Minister Modi for inviting investments from different countries and making India a manufacturing hub.

"On these issues, Prime Minister is telling more 'make in India'; if that type of thing has to come from different countries it's good. Our experience with USA in the olden days is not very advantageous or good for Indian interest," he said.
