Communist Party of India leader and a member of Rajya Sabha, D Raja on Friday questioned Prime Minister Narendra Modi on his silence with regard to the shutdown of the prominent non-vegetarian eateries in the Uttar Pradesh.

D. Raja told ANI, "The closure of meat shops is an act of hypocrisy. This can also be linked be hate mongering. Why Prime Minister Modi is silent over this? He should speak and put an end to this."

Further taking on BJP, Raja said religion should be used as an election related tool.

"Why should Uttar Pradesh make it an issue? The meat trade is an accepted trade in India. It is being exported as well. Why is the Yogi Adityanath -led UP Government forcing meat sellers to close their shops? It is like directing people on what to eat and what not to," D Raja added.

He alleged that Yogi Adityanath government is robbing the Uttar Pradesh people of their jobs

On the other, former Mumbai police commissioner and Member of Parliament Satyapal Singh said that the law should prevail in society.

"I also think it is good to eat as minimum meat as possible. It is healthy,"Singh told ANI.

Earlier, on Monday, in an official release, the state ordered the closure of illegal slaughter houses in view of the overall public order, safety and health of the general public.

Slaughter house owners and meat sellers in Uttar Pradesh have closed their shops following an indefinite strike call by different associations.

The strike was against the government's crackdown on illegal slaughter houses and retail meat shops.

According to reports, slaughter house owners and meat retailers are also protesting against raids by municipal authorities and police, alleging exploitation by the authorities.
