Daily life has come to a standstill after a landslide caused blocked roads in Reasi district of Jammu and Kashmir on Thursday.
Over 2,50,000 people living in around 35 villages of Reasi are cut off from other parts of the state for the last one week as the road connecting Arnas city and Rajouri district, which passes through the villages of Reasi, remains blocked.
The villagers say they are facing a tough time as they have run out of supplies after the landslide.
"This route is closed for the last four days. Thousands of people are stranded here for the last one week. People are crossing the mountain to travel from one side to another. It is very difficult, the route through the mountain is dangerous and it is impossible for a sick or weak person to make through this route," said a villager, Mohammed Goni.
"We have run out of all our basic items. We are not even able to buy vegetables, and if this route remains closed, then it is possible that people will start dying out of hunger," he added.
Earlier this month a landslide triggered by heavy rains in Udhampur district of Jammu and Kashmir had suspended the Hindu pilgrimage, Amarnath Yatra, also leading to the closure of Jammu-Srinagar National Highway.
Meanwhile, a legislator of National Conference (NC) party, Abdul Ghani Malik, said the charge of road construction and post landslide clearance has now been shifted from Public Works Department (PWD) to Border Roads Organisation (BRO).
He also assured that normalcy will return soon to the region.
