Delhi set for hung assembly, Congress routed

It is almost certain that Delhi is set for a hung assembly, with no major political party having an absolute majority of seats to form the next government.

The polls marked an impressive political debut of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) who gave a neck-to-neck competition to the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).

At the end of the counting of votes, the tally stood with the BJP winning 31seats, the AAP winning 28 seats, the Congress winning 8 seats while 3 seats went to the other parties.

Three-time Delhi Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit, who was defeated by the AAP leader Arvind Kejriwal, had forwarded her resignation to the Lt. Governor of Delhi Najeeb Jung, finally accepting that her Congress Party has lost the assembly polls in the national capital.

The 70-member Delhi assembly went to polls on December 4.

Latest trends in Rajasthan, the BJP is ahead in 162 seats, while Congress is leading in 21 seats. In Madhya Pradesh, BJP is ahead in 167 seats, while the Congress leading in 57 seats.

Earlier the results in Chhattisgarh were declared with the BJP retaining the state with clear majority. The BJP won 49 seats while the Congress won 39 seats in the elections.

The counting of votes in four states began here this morning amidst tight security and elaborate arrangements made by the Election Commission.

The votes will decide the fate of contesting candidates in Delhi, Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh where assembly elections were held between November 11 and December 4.
