The arrest of wheelchair-bound Delhi University professor G.N. Saibaba by the Maharashtra Police on Friday, resulted in his supporters taking to the street to protest and demand his immediate release on Saturday.
They described the arrest as unlawful and the charges slapped against him as false.
The revolutionary Democratic Front raised slogans against the Maharashtra Police and the government for the manner in which the Delhi University professor and activist of Democratic Rights was abducted and arrested by Maharashtra police on Friday over his alleged Maoist links.
A Delhi University student, Jyotsna, said that the way Professor Saibaba was arrested was uncalled for and demanded that he be released without further delay.
"We are dead against the manner in which Professor GN Saibaba was abducted and taken away by the Maharashtra police. We demand his release as soon as possible. He is a professor of Delhi University and an activist of the Democratic Rights and he is very well known," said Jyotsna.
According to reports, Saibaba hails from Andhra Pradesh's East Godavari District and was running an organisation that was acting as a front for the Maoists.
