Scores of teachers took to streets to demand a hike in their salaries on Wednesday.

The protest was organised under the banner of a local joint action committee. They raised anti-government slogans on the streets here, and the police had to baton charge the procession.

The protesters claimed that they had been demanding an increase in their existing salaries for the past nine years and there was no response from the authorities. They also complained that the transfer policy of the government was not transparent and they were paid a salary of only 51.06 USD per month.
