British millionaire Shrien Dewani's counsel has reportedly told the Cape Town High Court that his client has been framed by cabbie Zola Tongo in "a botched kidnap attempt" that led to the murder of his wife, Anni Dewani.

Dewani's defence counsel, Francois van Zyl, based his argument on a testimony received from convict Bernard Mitchell, who claimed that he spoke to Tongo in prison, reported the BBC.

Mitchell alleged that the taxi driver told him that the incident was a plot to get Dewani to pay ransom for his kidnapped wife.

Tongo is serving an 18-year jail term for his role in Anni's murder.

Dewani, who has been accused of orchestrating the murder of his wife in Cape Town in 2010, has denied all the charges.

The trail continues.
