British boxer Amir Khan has slammed WBC welterweight world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr's decision to overlook him for a fight in May in favour of WBA champion Marcos Maidana.

The unbeaten American, who asked fans via Twitter to choose between the former world light-welterweight champion and Maidana as his next opponent, will face the Argentine on May 3 at a venue, which is yet to be decided.

According to British reports, Khan expressed disappointment at Mayweather's decision to snub him as he does not have a big win at welterweight, although he claimed that he had been preparing himself for some time that the match with Mayweather was not going to happen now.

However, Khan slammed Mayweather and his team for not providing any explanation as to why he delayed the announcement for so long and ultimately avoided the fight with him, saying that clarification would have allowed him to look over his options and pursue another path, rather than the ultimate delay to his career this has caused.

Khan also said that even though he out-pointed Maidana in 2010 and then beat him in an official poll organised by Mayweather, getting 57 per cent of the vote, for unknown reasons, Mayweather decided to ignore the fans' vote and failed to keep his word.

The report mentioned that Khan's American promoter Golden Boy is now considering a rematch with Lamont Peterson, who controversially out-pointed Khan in 2011 and subsequently tested positive for a banned substance, or Adrien Broner.
