World number one Novak Djokovic has claimed that there is still a long way to go for the new wave of tennis stars to break the domination of the 'Big four' in tennis, after he won the Australian Open on Sunday.

Djokovic won his fifth Australian Open title after he overcame Andy Murray in four sets in the men's final on Sunday. He said that there is still a large gap between the elite and the rising stars of the game.

The world No 1, who cut a weary figure the day following the match, said that he thought the top-four ranked players, which include Murray, Rafael Nadal and Roger Federer, were still a cut above the rest, Stuff.co.nz reported.

The Serb said that the gap is narrowed, but it's still a long way for the new wave of tennis stars with the likes of Milos Raonic, Grigor Dimitrov and Kei Nishikori to make that step and break the domination of the top four guys.

He added that they are close and they are challenging and they are knocking on the door, but claimed that still if one sees the winners of the Grand Slams it is still the top four guys.

Djokovic admitted that of course last year they had Stanislas Wawrinka and Marin Cilic, which are two new names, but added that the young players still have to work to get there.
