England one-day skipper Eoin Morgan was the victim of an attempted blackmail over an alleged relationship with an Australian woman five years ago, said the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB).

Though the ECB had initially sought the help of police, the matter has now been resolved.

ECB managing director Paul Downton said that he was pleased the issue had now been brought to a swift conclusion, the BBC reported.

Morgan reportedly have had a relationship with an Australian woman five years ago, as a result of which, an Australian man had threatened the ECB to contact media in the UK and Australia regarding the matter, the report added.

Releasing a statement, ECB said that the Australian man was the current partner of the woman, and had blamed jealousy when confronted by police.

England will open their World Cup campaign against Australia on February 14 in Melbourne.
