The Egyptian security forces have accidentally shot dead at least 12 tourists and their guides, while 10 people were left injured.
According to the Guardian, some tourists were apparently Mexican.
Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement that the police and armed forces accidentally engaged with a tourist convoy while they were pursuing 'terrorist elements'.
The Interior Ministry statement claimed that the tourists should not have been in that area and their presence there was 'illegal'.
