Following a year-long investigation into alleged crimes committed by Egyptian security forces, the Human Rights Watch group has said that the atrocities committed against thousands of demonstrators will probably amount to crimes against humanity.

A report released by the U.S-based group said that almost 1,000 demonstrators were killed in a single day in the vicinity of Rabaa al-Adawiya mosque, reported the BBC.

Executive Director Kenneth Roth termed the incident one of the world's largest killing of demonstrators in a day in recent times.

The group investigated six demonstrations in July and August 2013 that were broken by the security forces forcibly, under the command of President Abdul Fattah al-Sisi.

Roth was due to launch the new report in Cairo during a press conference but was held by authorities at Cairo International Airport on Monday for 12 hours before being deported.
