A tusker trampled an elderly man to death while straying into Jhargram village in the West Midnapore District of West Bengal.
The elephant attacked the house of Rakhal Patra and slammed him to the ground.
"When he (father) was coming out of the house, he saw the elephant and rushed inside. The elephant entered the house, took him out and hurled him to his death," said Patra's son, Sukumar Patra.
Villagers said the elephant herd was moving around the village for the past few days, destroying everything that came in its way.
They sought the forest department's help to get rid of the tuskers.
Attacks by elephants have been frequent in West Bengal and Assam.
