Manager Roy Hodgson and his backroom staff deserved their hugs of delight, although the body language of the players as they walked on their lap of honour suggested they recognised it was only the end of Part One, the report said.
If England had not been able to win this match, they would have had to compete in the playoffs to qualify for the World Cup.
