English defender scores two own goals, concedes match-winning penalty in team's 3-2 loss

Welsh football club Newport's defender Tom Naylor had an afternoon to forget as he single-handedly gave his opponents Morecambe a 3-2 win in League Two, after scoring two own goals and conceding the match-winning penalty.

According to Metro.co.uk, the 22-year-old, who is on loan from Championship side Derby, will surely not have put in a worse performance in his career and the crowd at Rodney Parade can only hope it is a one-off.

His awful afternoon started in the 12th minute when, with County 1-0 up through Billy Jones, he spooned the ball into his own net from close range when trying to clear in the six-yard box, the report said.

Shortly afterwards, Naylor made a mess of a tackle and only Exiles keeper Lenny Pidgeley prevented the visitors from taking the lead, the report added.

He later fouled Kevin Ellison to give away the spot-kick from which Padraig Amond fired the Shrimps' winner, the report further said.

County manager Justin Edinburgh backed the defender to recover from the setback, expressing he would learn from the fiasco, according to the report.
