Haile Gebrselassie has announced his retirement from competitive running after finishing 16th in the Great Manchester Run.

Gebrselassie, who is considered as one of the greatest atheletics' distance runner, said that he knew this was going to be his last one, adding that he was happy to stop here, the BBC reported.

However, he insisted that he was retiring from competitive running and not from running, for it was his life.

Gebrselassie, who had earlier announced his retirement five years ago following knee problems which had forced him to drop out of the New York City Marathon, returned to racing a few months later.

A double Olympic medalist in the 10,000 meters, Gebrselassie remains the world record holder at 20,000 meters and one-hour race.

After completing his final competitive outing in Manchester, he went on to complete the route for a second time with the non-elite runners.
