Commenting on the Britain-EU referendum result, former London mayor Boris Johnson said this (Brexit) doesn't mean that UK will in any way be less united nor does it mean that it will be any less European.

"We cannot turn our backs on Europe, we are a part of Europe and Britain will continue to be a great European power," he said.

Referring to the Brexit polls, he said, "there was no way of dealing with a decision on this scale except by putting it to the people," and added he is very proud of the result.

The pro-Brexit campaigner said that the EU has become too remote, too opaque and not accountable enough to the people it is meant to serve and added that there is no need in the 21st century to be part of a federal system of government based in Brussels.

He further said Britain has a glorious opportunity to pass their own laws and set their own taxes according to needs of the UK economy and control borders in a way that is not discriminatory.

He, however, expressed disappointment over Prime Minister David Cameron's decision to resign.

"I am upset that he (Cameron) decided to step down but obviously I respect that decision," he said.

He described Cameron as "one of most extraordinary politicians of our age", and that his leadership has made the country the most dynamic economy in Europe.
