Former Scottish footballer Andy McLaren has opened up about his struggles after former English player Clarke Carlisle's suicide attempts saying it would have been difficult to admit to mental health issues 10 years back as football is quite a "macho sport".
McLaren said that more needs to be done to help players as his own exit from the sport sparked chronic depression, reported Daily Star.
He said that a lot has been said about mental health issues because of Carlisle and Jack Syme.
McLaren called for a continuation in addressing the issue and keeping its awareness intact.
He said that footballers and other sports players are not prepared for what the future holds when they retire and expect to see many opportunities.
Football gives players a sense of protection and it is quite a "false life", said McLaren.
