Roger Federer kept his cool on a hot day at the Australian Open to break another grand slam record while beating James Duckworth.

The 17-time grand slam champion's 6-4 6-4 6-2 win began his 57th consecutive major tournament, surpassing the Open Era record of 56 he had shared with South African Wayne Ferreira.

Speaking after his first round victory, Federer also spoke about his new head coach Stefan Edberg, who was in the stands for the first time.

He said he hit up with the Swedish former world No.1 pre-match and, while it was too early to tell how much impact Edberg would have on his game, News.com.au reports.

Federer was also happy to spend just an hour and 46 minutes on Rod Laver Arena as the temperature soared to 40 degrees.
