Ganguly should resign on basis of morality on Human Rights day: Pal

Congress leader Jagadambika Pal today demanded that former justice AK Ganguly who has been accused of sexually harassing a law intern, should resign from the West Bengal Human Rights Commission (WBHRC) on the occasion of Human Rights day.

"It is a serious issue as the whole nation has been raising it. What the Supreme Court decided has been decided, but Ganguly should resign on the basis of morality," said Pal.

"Today would be an appropriate day for him to resign as it is the Human Rights Day," he added.

The intern's allegations created a media furor with female lawyers and activists calling for the country's top court to investigate the incident and for the accused retired judge to be named publicly.

The Supreme Court set up a three-judge panel, which heard testimonies from both and submitted its report to the Chief Justice of India, P. Sathasivam, naming Ganguly as the accused.

It is for the first time that the Supreme Court had set up an internal inquiry into sexual harassment allegations against a former judge.
