The newly-appointed Union Home Secretary, L.C. Goyal, on Thursday vowed to fulfil his new assignment with utmost sincerity, commitment, diligence and with a profound sense of accountability.

"I feel humbled by this huge responsibility. I will fulfil this responsibility with utmost sincerity, commitment, diligence and with a profound sense of accountability. To be able to do so, I solicit active support and cooperation of all stakeholders," he said after assuming charge of his new office.

Goyal said the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) mandate is essentially to ensure effective maintenance of internal security in the country.

"To achieve this, necessary mechanisms, policies, and measures are in place," Goyal said.

"Wherever required and appropriate, improvements will be made within the given time-lines. This will be so done in close association and coordination with the state governments and Union Territories," he added.

Earlier in the day, Goyal replaced Anil Goswami as the new Union Home Secretary following a controversy over the arrest of a former union minister in connection with the Saradha chit-fund scam.

Goyal, a 1979-batch IAS officer of Kerala cadre, earlier held the charge of Secretary in the Ministry of Rural Development.
