Hafeez smashed an unbeaten knock of 97, including nine boundaries and three sixes to help Pakistan take a lead of 74 runs.
The 35-year-old all-rounder will now aim to score his ninth Test hundred when he will resume the second innings tomorrow along with Rahat Ali (0) at 146-3.
Pakistan lost opener Azhar Ali and Younis Khan for their respective scores of 34 and 14, while Shoaib Malik got dismissed for a duck.
