Reigning Formula One world champion Lewis Hamilton continued his dominance with an upgraded engine as he pipped his team-mate Nico Rosberg to emerge as the fastest driver in the second practice session for the Italian Grand Prix in Monza on Friday.

Hamilton was 0.021 seconds quicker than his Mercedes team-mate Rosberg, with Sebastian Vettel of Ferrari finishing as the third fastest driver, the Guardian reported.

The Mercedes-powered Force India cars of Sergio Perez and Nico Hulkenberg grabbed the fourth and fifth spots.

Meanwhile, tyre manufacturers Pirelli are under the spotlight in Italy following the blow-out row at the Belgian Grand Prix.

Hamilton leads the Drivers' championship standings by 28 points after claiming his sixth win of the season at Spa.
