Off-spinner Simon Harmer claimed four wickets as India were bowled out for 215 in their first innings on the opening day of the third Test against South Africa in Nagpur on Wednesday.
Opting to bat first, the hosts failed to capitalise their innings despite getting a good start. Murali Vijay was the top scorer with 40 on a dry, dusty pitch at the Vidharba Cricket Association stadium.
India were reeling at 125-6 before Wriddhiman Saha (32) and Ravindra Jadeja (34) steadied the ship by building a 48-run partnership for the seventh wicket.
Fast bowler Morne Morkel bagged three wickets, while Kagiso Rabada, Imran Tahir and Dean Elgar took a wicket apiece.
India, who are currently leading the series 1-0 following their 108-run win in the first Test in Mohali, are aiming to clinch the series.
The second match between the two sides ended in a draw due to persistent rain and wet outfield.
Meanwhile, South Africa, who have not lost a Test series abroad since 2006, have now come to a do or die situation where they will have to win the third Test in order to stay alive in the series.
