Defence Secretary Michael Fallon has said that hundreds of British troops would be sent to Iraq in January to train local forces fighting the Islamic State (IS).

The deployment would be made to four training centres that the United States forces are establishing and will be in "very low hundreds," Fallon said. It may also include a small unit of combat-ready soldiers, reported the BBC.

About 50 soldiers are already training Iraqi and Kurdish forces in Iraq.

The Ministry of Defence said that the move has not yet been formally approved and no decisions on troop numbers and locations have been made.
